I forgot to mention that there are 2 supercomputers called Jaguar. Both of them are installed in Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The newer one is a Cray XT5 and the older one is a Cray XT4. Both of them are using the AMD quad-core Opteron CPU. To the surprise of some people, Oak Ridge has not linked these two Jaguar computers together to take the title of the fastest supercomputer in the list of Top 500 supercomputers in Nov, 2008. Instead, one of them became the second fastest and the other became the 8th fastest in the list of Nov, 2008.

Oak Ridge has said more than once that the computers were for science rather than taking the title of the fastest supercomputer on Earth. However, the Laboratory is under some pressure to take this title. Hence, they might run the Linpack benchmark on the newly upgraded Jaguar (upgrade to 6-core Opteron CPUs) to claim the fastest supercomputer. Actually, even without the last month's upgrade, Janguar should be the fastest computer in the list of June 2009. However, Oak Ridge National Latoratory has no interest to run the benchmark to claim the title.

Patrick.
